Fishing: The Bitterroot River Bed & Breakfast enjoys direct river front access to prime trout fishing. The Bitterroot is well known as one of the finest dry fly fishing rivers in Montana, with healthy populations of naturally reproducing rainbow, cutthroat, and brown trout (no hatchery fish here!). The dry fly fishing season begins before the spring runoff, as early as March, with the famed Skwala stonefly hatch. The fishing generally holds up well into the hunting season in November. At the B&B our river front access provides the wading or bank fisherman with the opportunity to spend a few hours or the entire day exploring the Bitterroot River on foot. The only expense is your gear and fishing license. With our Wi-Fi internet, guests are able to purchase their fishing licenses on-line and print the license right here at the B&B. For those that want a guided fishing experience, there are several excellent local outfitters and guides who regularly take our B&B guests float fishing in rafts or drift boats. These pros know what they are doing and their trips always produce great memories and almost always lots of fish. We will be happy to recommend an outfitter that will best serve your particular needs.

The Bitterroot isn't the only game in town; there are several other excellent fishing streams in the area including the Big Hole River, Clark Fork River and Rock Creek. In addition, the many crystal clear creeks that empty into the valley from the Bitterroot Mountains offer consistently excellent fishing for brook and cutthroat trout.

Other Recreation: Recreational activities at the Bitterroot River B&B are only limited by your imagination. Of course there is great fishing, but the River also provides rafting, canoeing, tubing, swimming, sunbathing on secluded sand bars, rock skipping, even snorkeling! If the river leaves you waterlogged you can head for the hills. The nearby Selway-Bitterroot wilderness area is prime hiking, backpacking and rock-climbing country. After a short drive, you can take a day hike to the top of nearby St.Mary's Peak. From the 9,300' summit, you can see the entire Bitterroot Valley. Winter recreation opportunities from snowmobiling to downhill and cross-country skiing are available nearby. The area is very scenic and harbors abundant wildlife. Eagles, osprey, herons, deer, elk, moose, and coyotes are a few of the animals that frequent the beautiful riparian habitat found along the Bitterroot River. The Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge is located just minutes from the B&B.

Stevensville, "Where Montana Began" is Montana's oldest permanent settlement. It was established when Fr. Pierre DeSmet founded the St. Mary's Mission in 1841, at the request of the Native American Salish people who were seeking the "Black Robes" as teachers. St. Mary's Mission still stands a few blocks from the B&B. A tour of the Mission is truly an enlightening and historical experience.
